SLIDELL, LA (WVUE) - A woman accused of stealing a puppy from a Slidell pet store has been arrested. The stolen Toy Poodle was found hidden in her closet, police say.
Stephanie Orso, 29, was arrested on Wednesday night. Her arrest came following a traffic stop initiated for an unrelated offense.
The officer who pulled Orso over was unaware of the puppy theft on Monday afternoon. The theft happened around 2:45 p.m. Monday at Double M Feed Garden and Pet Supply, located in the 1100 block of Gause Blvd. Officers say that an eight-week old, apricot colored Toy Poodle was stolen. The suspect was caught on surveillance video and seen fleeing the store in red Toyota.
The officer conducting the traffic stop let Orso go, unaware of the puppy theft. The officer recalled that the suspect was pulled over in a red Toyota Solara and had a small puppy. He was later informed of the incident and recognized Orso as the suspect caught on video surveillance inside of the pet store, officers say.
Orso's home address was obtained and officers responded to the address. Police say they made contact with Orso, who admitted to the theft. The Toy Poodle was found safe inside of Orso's closet where she attempted to hide it, officers say.
The puppy was returned unharmed.
But wait, there's more.
An employee at the store said two customers wanted the dog and the dog's sister so the two could stay together. Apparently, the dogs are very close and were excited to be reunited.
The two customers began haggling, but eventually came to an agreement that they would each buy one of the dogs and visit together once a month so the dog siblings could continue to see each other.
Meantime, Orso was arrested and charged with the theft of goods over $500.
