Pelicans hire Alvin Gentry as new Head Coach

NEW ORLEANS, LA (WVUE) -

The New Orleans Pelicans have hired Alvin Gentry as the team's new head coach, FOX 8 News confirmed Saturday evening.

Gentry, who is an assistant coach with NBA Western Conference Champion Golden State Warriors, replaces Monty Williams who was fired on May 12, 2015.

Gentry first met with team officials on May 20th in San Francisco. He brings 12 years of experience as a head coach in the NBA and has a record of 335-370. New Orleans will be Gentry's fifth head coaching job in the NBA. He previously coached the Miami Heat, Detroit Pistons, Los Angeles Clippers and Phoenix Suns. He led the Suns conference finals in 2010.

Pelicans team officials say that Gentry will remain as an assistant with the Warriors until the end of the NBA Finals.
