NEW ORLEANS (WVUE) -

The Orleans Parish Sheriff's Office is investigating the death of an inmate Saturday night.

According to the Orleans Parish Sheriff's Office, an inmate had an apparent cardiac arrest and died at the hospital around 7:42 p.m. May 30.

The inmate, identified as 59-year-old Charles Allen, was facing narcotics distribution and firearms charges. He was processed on May 28.

Officials with the OPSO said Allen reported various medical conditions to the prison's medical staff and was immediately placed in the appropriate medical protocol for opiate detoxification.

During a medical check, Allen was unresponsive, but revived by medical staff. EMS then took him to Interim LSU Hospital where he later died, officials say.

A full autopsy will be conducted by the coroners office to determine the cause of death.
