HARVEY, LA (WVUE) - Staff at McGuire's Pit Stop West are asking for help finding a man they say stole a donation jar filled with cash for a cancer patient.
Scott Michel is suffering Stage 4 colon cancer, so friends of his at the bar decided to take up a collection, generating hundreds of dollars in donations in just a few short weeks - until they realized Wednesday night that the donation jar was missing.
"We looked around frantically, couldn't find it anywhere, so I got on the cameras narrowed it down to when the jug was there when the jug wasn't there, got that time frame and I literally saw the guy swiping the jug and running out the front door," said bar manager Kent "Hollywood" Hunter.
Surveillance video shows the man nudging the jar to the edge of the bar before checking to see if anyone was looking and then snatching the jar and bolting through the front door.
"He's a real piece of crap, that's as nice as I can say," Hunter said. For anyone to do something that low - to steal from a man who's got kids and fighting Stage 4, and we're trying to do something good for him and his picture and information is all over that - he knew what he was taking."
But the crew at the bar won't give up on Michel, already planning a benefit in his honor this weekend.
"This Sunday we're having a benefit here for him," Hunter said. "We're having a bike show, we're having a car show, we'll have two bands playing, tons and tons of food, raffle prizes, door prizes, just a lot of good stuff going on, and we're going to be busy, busy, busy."
The benefit kicks off this Sunday at 11 a.m. The staff says they think they may know who the man is, but plan on letting the police handle the rest.
