SECAUCUS, NJ (WVUE) - Three years after choosing LSU over the MLB's Boston Red Sox, New Mexico native Alex Bregman is heading back west to the Houston Astros.
The senior shortstop didn't have to wait long in Monday's draft to hear his name called. Bregman was taken with the second overall pick, just after Vanderbilt shortstop Dansby Swanson went to the Diamondbacks.
Despite slumping lately in the postseason, Bregman is a finalist for the Golden Spikes Award, recognizing the nation's top amateur baseball player.
LSU has had 15 first round draft picks since 1989.
