Man killed in plunge from CBD parking garage

NEW ORLEANS (WVUE) - One person is dead after a car fell from a parking garage in the Central Business District.

The incident happened around 7 a.m. Wednesday morning near the intersection of Camp and Poydras streets.

New Orleans police say the 49-year-old driver of a Nissan pick-up truck was on the fifth or sixth level of a parking garage when, for reasons unknown, he crashed through a steel cable barrier and glass window. The vehicle fell to the ground and killed the driver.

A passing vehicle was struck by debris from the incident. The driver was treated for minor injuries and released from a local hospital.

Onlookers rushed to the scene after hearing a crash nearby. The truck toppled from the garage, landing on the upside-down on the street below.

Blood and alcohol tests are pending. The Orleans Parish coroner will release the victim's name and will conduct an autopsy to determine the exact cause of death.
