SLIDELL, LA (WVUE) - Louisiana State Police are investigating a crash involving an overturned 18-wheeler, that claimed the lives of a Mandeville couple. The incident occurred Sunday, just after 11:30 a.m. on Interstate 10 eastbound, just east of Slidell.
Investigators say the driver of the semi truck, identified as 36-year-old Bruno Palacios of Richardson, Texas, failed to adjust his speed and rear-ended a Toyota Corolla, pushing it into the median. The impact caused the 18-wheeler to overturn and come to rest in the median while partially blocking the left westbound lane.
Police say that 82-year-old George Wells, who was driving the Toyota, and his wife, 80-year-old Jean Wells, were pronounced dead on the scene.
The accident slowed traffic in the area, but all lanes east and westbound were later opened.
Troopers say that all involved in the accident were properly restrained. Investigators do not believe that any involved were impaired.
The crash is still under investigation and criminal charges are pending.
