NEW ORLEANS, LA (WVUE) - City leaders announced Monday that New Orleans has been selected as one of 50 cities to take part in a new initiative to help children and teens better connect with the outdoors.
The Department of Interior's website says its youth initiative aims to reach at least 10 million students in kindergarten through 12th grade every year, and also develop new opportunities for them to play outside. The program's goal involves recruiting volunteers to help in national parks and public lands, as well as job training to encourage people to work outdoors.
Grant money will help the New Orleans Dryades YMCA create a community coordinator for the effort. Other participating cities include Boston, Los Angeles and Miami. The Interior Department will announce the remaining 25 cities next year.
