MARRERO, LA (WVUE) -

Jefferson Parish sheriff's deputies arrested a man who allegedly stabbed his two children, broke into a neighbor's house and set a garbage can on fire.

Officers booked Kenny Dupre, Sr., 31, with attempted murder, aggravated burglary, simple arson and assault.

Deputies were called to the 1500 block of Stella Place in Marrero around 4 a.m. on Friday after the suspect's wife said he was acting violent and threatening to kill her.

After the phone call, officers say Dupre stabbed his 13-year-old and four-year-old sons. The older boy was trying to shield his brother when they were attacked, according to family members. The mother was not injured.

When investigators arrived, Dupre fled the scene. He allegedly broke into a neighbor's home and barricaded himself inside the bathroom. He then set a trash can on fire and cut his wrists.

Officers were able to take him into custody. He remains in the Jefferson Parish Correctional Center.

According to Dupre's brother, there had been ongoing fights between Dupre and his wife. He was taking a number of medications and was "not himself" when the incident occurred.

The 13-year-old is in the hospital, but he is expected to recover from the cuts. His brother suffered minor injuries.
