Hundreds celebrate SCOTUS ruling in New Orleans

NEW ORLEANS, LA (WVUE) - Hundreds of New Orleanians were celebrating the Supreme Court's landmark ruling Friday to legalize same-sex marriage nationwide.

Gay rights activists gathered for an equality rally in Jackson Square cheering and carrying signs that said "love wins."

"Recognize that our marriage is the same as anybody else's marriage and we want to have a family and we want to have the same rights too," said Andy Forester of New Orleans.

But, there were many in Louisiana who were not celebrating.

"Love is Love and I certainly accept that, but at the same time, married love is between a man and a woman, for their unity and also for the reproduction of children and so it's really not possible to see it as the same as marriage," said New Orleans' Archbishop Gregory Aymond.

Many states where gay marriage was previously banned started issuing marriage licenses Friday but not in Louisiana where it is currently on hold.
