Man arrested for setting fire to estranged wife's rental home

ST. BERNARD PARISH, LA (WVUE) - St. Bernard Parish Sheriff's Deputies arrested a man for setting fire to a rental home belonging to his estranged wife.The incident occurred Tuesday afternoon in the 3000 block of Pecan Drive.  Police arrested 47-year-old John Schuster for setting the blaze. Authorities say that Schuster has a criminal history that includes arrests for robbery and receiving stolen property.

Neither Schuster's wife nor his children were home at the time of the incident, according to police. Schuster's wife took her children from the home in fear Tuesday morning after finding that Schuster stole her SUV . Schuster's wife told detectives that she and Schuster were arguing the night before and he threatened to tie her up inside the house before setting it on fire.

Witnesses say that they observed Schuster taking items from the home prior to setting it on fire. He was arrested around 5:15 p.m. Tuesday after deputies responded to a disturbance at the home of a relative of Schuster's wife, in eastern St. Bernard Parish. Deputies recovered the stolen items at the time of the arrest.

Schuster was booked with arson, the theft of items from the home, auto theft and criminal damage of more than $50,000.

He is being held at the St. Bernard Parish Jail. A bond has not been set in his case.

The State Fire Marhall is assisting the St. Bernard Parish Fire Department in the investigation into the cause of the fire.
