Lockport man sets house on fire, stabs dog

LOCKPORT, LA (WVUE) - A Lockport man doused his home with gasoline, stabbed a dog and set the home ablaze, according to Lockport police.

Duane Ryan Jr, 24, was arrested Wednesday night. The alleged incident happened around 8 p.m. in the 300 block of Justin Street.

Officers say that Ryan began his rampage following a verbal altercation with friends. He grabbed two knives from the kitchen and walked outside to confront the men, police say.

The men fled the scene. At some point, police say Ryan stabbed the pet dog near its eye.

He continued to pour gasoline around the exterior of the home. At this point, police say Ryan's girlfriend took the dog and left the house. The girlfriend tells police that Ryan later called and threatened to burn the house down if she did not return home.

A short time later, Ryan's girlfriend told police she saw smoke coming from inside of the home. The fire department was called to extinguish the blaze.

The residence was a total loss, according to police.

Officers took Ryan into custody. He faces charges of arson and aggravated animal cruelty. He was transported to the Lafourche Parish Detention Center in Thibodaux where he was booked accordingly. Bond has not been set.

Officers say he is also being held for parole violation. Ryan had just been released from a three-year prison stay in February for charges of burglary and auto theft, according to Lockport police.

He has been arrested 10 other times, all in Lafourche Parish, for charges such as burglary, attempted robbery, theft, assault and battery.
