NEW ORLEANS, LA (WVUE) - The Coast Guard responded to to a collision between two towing vessels that caused a chemical spill in the Mississippi River near Vacherie.
As a result of the collision, the Coast Guard says a number of barges broke loose.
One barge loaded with caustic soda overturned and spilled an unknown amount of the material into the waterway. Investigators say it will neutralize and pose minimal risk.
The Coast Guard notified drinking water authorities and surrounding parishes about the spill.
The barge is out of the waterway on the bank. All of the other loose barges were safety recovered. The river is open to ship traffic.
