NEW ORLEANS (WVUE) - The second suspect sought in the shooting death of a St. Augustine student is now in police custody.
Donovan Williams, 21, was booked into Orleans Parish Prison around 4:30 a.m. Friday on second degree murder charges.
Twenty-two-year-old Trever Mitchell turned himself in at the Seventh District station on Thursday. After being questioned, he was taken to Central Lock-up and booked accordingly.
Williams was at large through early Friday. Both men face a charge of second-degree murder in the death of 18-year-old Jawara Givens, a student at St. Augustine High School.
The shooting happened Tuesday around 1:30 a.m. in the 6800 block of Lake Kenilworth Drive. Officers arriving on the scene found Givens shot multiple times inside a vehicle. He was hospitalized and died from his injuries Thursday.
St. Augustine released the following statement:
"As a community we have had a difficult summer, and our feelings of sadness and loss extend across our campus and beyond. Our prayers are with the family and friends of Jawara Givens, as well as the entire St. Augustine High School Family.
"Jawara was admired by faculty and peers alike. It is with a shared sense of shock and sadness that the St. Augustine High School Family expresses our utmost sympathy over the meaningless act of violence that resulted in the devastating loss of our bright, rising senior.
"Our guidance counselors, as well as other support staff are on campus and available to meet with students and faculty, and will continue to offer support as needed. We encourage everyone in our community to check in with friends and classmates if they seem to be in need. We are here for one another, and everyone is an important piece of what makes up the Purple Knight family."
Anyone with information about the shooting is asked to contact Crimestoppers at (504) 822-1111.
