Crimestoppers urges parent-child talks after girl, 7, is raped

NEW ORLEANS, LA (WVUE) - A man accused of raping a 7-year-old girl is still on the loose. New Orleans police say the sexual assault happened Wednesday night at the Hidden Lake Apartments in New Orleans East. Since then, investigators have released surveillance video that they hope will help identify the suspect.

The video shows the unidentified man leading the little girl into the breezeway of an apartment complex. We spoke with the girl's family Thursday night, and they said the man lured her away from other kids in a courtyard by promising her a frozen treat.

The president of New Orleans Crimestoppers says they're urging anyone with information to come forward, and they're offering a reward for information that leads to an arrest.

"Certainly with the surveillance footage we're urging anybody with information to give us a call," said Darlene Cusanza. "Right now there is $2,500 cash on the table - $2,500 cash to make this arrest."

And until he's caught, Cusanza is asking parents to look closely at the video and to talk with their children.

"I think, first off, as parents, that we talk to our children - particularly those living in that apartment complex - and ask if any other child has seen this man. Most likely perpetrators go back to where they are familiar. He may have been in that neighborhood," Cusanza said.

If you have any information about the case, call Crimestoppers at 502.822.1111.
