Customer shoots robber outside of New Orleans East gas station, store owner says

NEW ORLEANS (WVUE) -

A customer shot an alleged robber following a holdup at a New Orleans East gas station.

The shooting happened around 5 a.m. Wednesday at a Shell station, located near the intersection of Chef Menteur Highway and Downman Road.

A man entered the store and demanded cash from the clerk and a customer, according to the store owner. The suspect fled the store to the parking lot.

The store owner says surveillance video shows the customer run into the parking lot and get a gun out of his truck. He then confronted the robber at the side of the store, according to the owner, and ordered the man several times to get down on the ground.

The store owner says the alleged robber began shooting and the customer returned fire, hitting the man at least once.

He was transported to the hospital for treatment and will be booked upon release. His condition is unknown at this time
