7-year-old girl pronounced dead after swimming in Lake Pontchartrain

NEW ORLEANS, LA (WVUE) -

New Orleans Police are investigating an incident that claimed the life of a seven-year-old girl. The incident occurred Saturday at 4 p.m. in the 5400 block of Lakeshore Drive.

Police say that officers responded to a call of unknown trouble. When they arrived they learned that a group of girls were swimming in Lake Pontchartrain. Witnesses say that they noticed that the girls were struggling in the water and began helping them get to shore. The witnesses noticed that one of the girls, a seven-year-old, was unresponsive.

EMTs rushed the girl to a nearby hospital where she was later pronounced dead. The Orleans Parish Coroner will conduct an autopsy to determine that exact cause of death. The coroner's office will also release the girl's name.
