NEW ORLEANS, LA (WVUE) - New Orleans Police are investigating an incident in Lake Pontchartrain that resulted in the death of a 5-year-old boy.
The incident occurred Sunday at 5 p.m. in the 5400 block of Lakeshore Drive. The incident comes only one day after a seven-year-old girl died after her body was pulled from the lake.
Police say they received a call of a possible drowning in Lake Pontchartrain. Responding officers arrived and learned that the aunt of the child was in the water with the boy holding his hand. The boy moved towards deeper water when his hand slipped from his aunt's grasp. The boy went into the deeper water where he went under. The aunt immediately attempted to locate him, but was unsuccessful.
When the child was found, EMTs rushed him to a nearby hospital where he was pronounced dead, according to police. The Orleans Parish Coroner will perform an autopsy to determine the exact cause of death.
