NEW ORLEANS (WVUE) - Funeral arrangements have been announced for fallen New Orleans Police Officer Vernell Brown Jr., the 17-year NOPD veteran who died following an accident on the Pontchartrain Expressway.
Brown was struck by a car July 12. He was working a crash on U.S. 90 at the I-10 East split with two recruits when the crash happened. As he stepped out of the police cruiser, investigators say two cars crashed, one of which hit Brown, sending him into a coma from which he would never emerge.
Brown died on July 17.
A public viewing and memorial mass will be held on Saturday (July 25) at Greater St. Stephens Full Gospel Baptist Church, located at 5600 Read Boulevard in New Orleans East. Visitation will take place from 7-10:30 a.m.. A memorial mass will follow at 11 a.m..
A burial ceremony will immediately follow the memorial mass at the Law Enforcement Memorial at Lakelawn Cemetery, located at 5100 Pontchartrain Boulevard. All memorial events are open to the public.
In the meantime, no charges have been filed against the drivers involved in the accident.
