NEW ORLEANS, LA (WVUE) -

A man who was shot by a customer after he allegedly held up a gas station in New Orleans East died at the hospital Tuesday, police said.

The shooting of 26-year-old Ronnie Magee happened July 15 at around 5 a.m. at a Shell station located near the intersection of Chef Menteur Highway and Downman Road.

Police said Magee entered the store and demanded cash from the clerk and a customer, then fled.

The store owner said surveillance video shows the customer run into the parking lot and get a gun out of his truck. He then confronted Magee and ordered him to get down on the ground. Magee began shooting and the customer returned fire, hitting Magee in the hip, police said.

The NOPD Homicide Division has taken over the investigation from the Seventh District.

No charges have been filed against the customer.
