A New Orleans police officer shot and killed a 60-year-old man in the Lower Ninth Ward following a physical altercation.

The incident occurred around 9:30 a.m. Saturday morning at the intersection of Caffin and Chartres Streets.

Police say that a homicide detective Timothy Bender was in full uniform after having left the services for fallen NOPD Officer Vernell Brown. Bender was flagged down by a resident who reported a person driving erratically.
