NEW ORLEANS, LA (WVUE) - A New Orleans police officer shot and killed a 60-year-old man in the Lower Ninth Ward following a physical altercation.
The incident occurred around 9:30 a.m. Saturday morning at the intersection of Caffin and Chartres Streets.
Police say that a homicide detective Timothy Bender was in full uniform after having left the services for fallen NOPD Officer Vernell Brown. Bender was flagged down by a resident who reported a person driving erratically.
While investigating the situation, the detective became involved in a physical confrontation with the suspect, officers say.
A police spokesman said that the detective feared for his life and opened fire on the suspect, killing him. Police say that the suspect was not armed.
The incident remains under investigation.
