AFR: Fazende's way-too-early Saints roster projections

AFR: Fazende's way-too-early Saints roster projections

NEW ORLEANS, LA (WVUE) - It is way too early to start projected the Saints roster. But, I did it anyway. My "before-their-first-training-camp-practice" 53-man Saints roster projection.

Quarterbacks (3)
Drew Brees
Luke McCown
Garrett Grayson
It all boils down to Luke McCown and Ryan Griffin for the backup quarterback spot. It's McCown's job until RG 4 takes it.

Running Backs (4)
Mark Ingram
CJ Spiller
Khiry Robinson
Marcus Murphy
Murphy's ability as a return man puts him on the roster for now.

Fullback (1)
Erik Lorig
Lorig is the incumbent though Austin Johnson filled in pretty well until he was injured as well last season. This could be an underrated battle of training camp.

Offensive lineman (8)
Terron Armstead
Jahri Evans
Tim Lelito
max Unger
Zach Strief
Andrus Peat
Senio Kelemete
Bryce Harris
Harris and Kelemete are the most at risk for losing their spot should a couple of players emerge. It was hard to get a gauge on that in minicamp. Now that the pads are coming on, the battle in the trenches will pick up.

Tight ends (3)
Ben Watson
Josh Hill
Jack Tabb
Losing out on Jermaine Gresham hurt the potential depth at tight end. Watson and Hill are locks. This could be a slot where an undrafted player plays his way on. Right now, I have that player as Jack Tabb.

Wide Receiver (5)
Marques Colston
Brandin Cooks
Nick Toon
Brandon Coleman
Seantavious Jones
Easily the most fluid situation of camp. Right now my three behind Cooks and Colston are: Toon , Coleman and Jones. The Saints could potentially keep six should someone emerge in the return game like Jalen Saunders.

Specialists (3)
Thomas Morstead
Justin Dreshcer
Zach Hocker
The kicker battle is on and no one is in the lead, I have Hocker here but that could very easily change.

Defensive linemen (7)
Cam Jordan
Akiem Hicks
Kevin Williams
Tyeler Davison
John Jenkins
Brodrick Bunkley
Glenn Foster
Another group that will get a true evaluation once the pads come on.

Outside linebacker (5)
Parys Haralson
Hau'oli Kikaha
Anthony Spencer
Ronald Powell
Davis Tull
Galette's departure opens a spot for someone. Powell's ability to play special teams puts him on right now.

Inside linebacker (4)
David Hawthorne
Stephone Anthony
Dannell Ellerbe
Ramon Humber

Cornerbacks (5)
Keenan Lewis
Brandon Browner
PJ Williams
Delvin Breaux
Damian Swann

Safety (5)
Kenny Vaccaro
Jairus Byrd
Rafael Bush
Vinnie Sunseri
Pierre Warren
I'm still debating if ten defensive backs (5 cbs, 5 safeties) are enough for today's NFL. For now, it is.
Special teams will be the tiebreaker.

Last 4 out:
Josh Morgan
Kasim Edebali
Stanley Jean Baptiste
Jamarca Sanford
