(WVUE) - Highway I-55 northbound was shut down for nearly nine hours Thursday morning due to an accident involving two 18-wheelers.
The accident happened around midnight at milepost 13.6 in St. John Parish, according to Louisiana State Police. The highway did not re-open until 9 a.m. Thursday morning.
Officers say that a car-hauler was traveling northbound on the highway when he pulled onto the right shoulder to secure his load. At the same time, troopers say that a tractor-trailer was traveling northbound in the right lane approaching the car hauler.
As the car hauler tried to re-enter I-55, the driver pulled into the path of the oncoming tractor-trailer.
The two trucks collided. The tractor-trailer struck a bridge rail and overturned, troopers say. Two vehicles on the car-hauler caught fire and became partially dislodged.
The driver of the tractor-trailer was transported to the hospital with minor injuries. State troopers say the driver of the car-hauler was not injured.
