Lakeview residents sound off on crime after recent armed robbery

NEW ORLEANS, LA (WVUE) -

A father and son were robbed at gunpoint in Lakeview Wednesday night, and the suspects may have been caught on camera. Now, neighbors say enough is enough.

A neighbor's surveillance camera on General Haig where the armed robbery happened captured video that shows three men checking car doors around 11:45 Wednesday night. Moments after those men stepped out of frame, the father and son were robbed at gunpoint. The robbers then took off in the victims' Acura SUV.

"Regarding the armed robbery, we are still working that, we were working today collecting even more video from the neighbors, were in the process of editing that down so we can get it out to the news media," New Orleans Police District 3 Commander Gary Marchese said.

While police tell us crime in District 3 is down by 21 percent, neighbors say they're fed up and want city officials to make their safety their top priority.

The wife and mother of those latest two armed robbery victims had strong words for city leaders at a community meeting Thursday night. We've chosen to protect her identity, "I came back. I'm here rebuilding the city like the rest of y'all but y'all aren't going to stay if the crime continues, you can't have nice roads if you can't walk to your front door without a gun being put to your head."

The NOPD says they are working to get a suspect description and picture together from that surveillance video captured around the time of the armed robbery.

In the meantime, investigators are asking neighbors to take their valuables out of their cars and make sure their car doors are locked. The district commander also tells us they will have a number of officers frequently patrolling Lakeview neighborhoods.
