ALGIERS, LA (WVUE) -

Police arrested the man they believe robbed an Algiers bank this afternoon.

According to NOPD, 38-year-old El-Hanini Mohammed robbed the First Bank and Trust located at 4550 General Degaulle Drive Friday, July 31.

Mohammed allegedly walked into the bank around 3:20 p.m. and pulled out a semi-automatic pistol. He then handed the teller a note demanding large bills. Police say the bank employee gave Mohammed a bag containing an undetermined amount of cash and Mohammed ran out of the building, firing a single round into the ceiling as he left. Mohammed then jumped into a black Lincoln sedan and drove away.

Mohammed's escape didn't last long. According to NOPD, Fourth District Officers Michael Guasco and George Olivier recognized his car as he fled the area at a high rate of speed and pulled him over near the corner of Hwy 406 and Bryson Street. Mohammed peacefully complied with officers and exited the vehicle without incident.

Officers found a handgun and bag of cash in his car, according to NOPD. A witness from the robbery then positively identified Mohammed as the alleged robber and he was then turned over to the FBI for booking.

Police said the investigation is ongoing.
