Superdome turns 40: A look back and ahead

NEW ORLEANS (WVUE) -

The roar of the crowd.

"He was 14, I was 16," says John Romano, remembering the Saints' first playoff win. "My mom bought the ticket and we all sat in a row. I remember when he dropped the punt, I was hugging people I didn't know. I seen people crying."

The thrill of the rides.

"The Super Fair, when I was 16, says Carrieyon Edwards. "That's my favorite. It was exciting! They had all the rides and stuff. I wish they'd bring that back."

The Mercedes-Benz Superdome holds 40 years of memories.

The Dome opened August 3rd 1975.

In the four decades since, countless fans of football, music, politics, even the pope have passed through the doors.

"We started off really strong and we're 40 strong as of today," says Alan Freeman, general manager of the Mercedes-Benz Superdome.

Using the hashtag #40strong, Superdome officials want fans to share their favorite dome memories on social media.

Some of the biggest moments will be on display for the next 40 nights.

"Starting tonight, we're going to be projecting an iconic event on the southwest corner of the building and those 40 events were selected by our management staff," says Freeman. "It'll be interesting to see if people agree with what we picked but I think it's going to be fun for people to look forward to what's next?"

What's next for the Dome itself?

New video boards, sound and light systems and upgraded suites, all in time for the 2016 football season.

And there will be more celebrations to come.

"We didn't want to go overboard because we feel like there's going to be a 45th and a 50th anniversary," says Freeman.

For all the big moments that happened here, it's a few December mornings Gabriel Leon remembers best.

The Toys for Tots giveaways when he was a kid.

"You in line waiting and then once you make it in there, you see the Dome lit up and all pretty, Finally make it down to the bottom and you get your gift," says Leon. "That's like the coolest ever. that's the best memory for me."

And there are more memories to make in the years ahead.
