NEW ORLEANS, LA (WVUE) -

The NOPD is investigating a traffic accident that killed a 52-year-old male bicyclist.

The crash occurred just after 1 p.m. at the intersection of Canal and North Broad streets.

According to investigators, the cyclist and a dump truck were both traveling lake-bound on Canal Street when the dump truck made a right turn onto North Broad, hitting the cyclist.

The bicyclist died on the scene. The 34-year-old male truck driver was not injured.

The truck driver was taken to the DWI compound for testing and questioning.

No charges have been filed, but the investigation is ongoing. Once complete, detectives will consult with the district attorney's office on any charges.

Fatality Investigator Anthony Pontiff is handling the investigation.

The website governing.com says Louisiana is the second deadliest state in the nation for cyclists. On a per capita basis, Louisiana recorded an annual average of about 3.8 cyclist deaths per million residents.
