(WVUE) -

An 8-foot alligator made an appearance Sunday on a South Carolina beach.

Rainer Hengst captured video and stills of the reptile, which likely wandered out of a marsh near Pawley's Island.

Hengst said the gator would go out in the surf and periodically head back to shore, "trying to see if it was safe get out and cross back to the marsh."

Animal control officers snagged the alligator with a large fishing tackle and then threw a noose around its neck, Hengst said.

"Then they let it tire itself out rolling, as gators do, put a smaller noose on the muzzle (?), taped it up, secured the legs and enlisted the help of bystanders to carry it across the dunes to a waiting truck," Hengst posted on Facebook. "They knew what they were doing. ...For just a little while people were not concerned about sharks at all!"
