NEW ORLEANS, LA (WVUE) - New Orleans Police arrested three men on drug, gun and stolen property charges. The incident occurred Tuesday at 1 p.m. in the 1500 block of LaSalle Street.
According to police, officers were patrolling in the area when they noticed five men standing near a green SUV. One of the men noticed the marked police car and began to walk away.
Police say that the rest of the men appeared to become nervous and began running away. One of the men, later identified as 27-year-old Jamal Martin dropped a set of keys, while another, later identified as 17-year-old Charles Garner, dropped a plastic bag. Martin, Garner and the three remaining men were all taken into custody.
During investigation, police discovered that the bag that Garner dropped contained heroin. He was immediately placed under arrest. They also learned that the keys that Martin dropped were to the SUV which was reported stolen. He too was placed under arrest.
Investigators found two guns and a phone on the back seat of the car. Police learned that one of the guns was stolen from another parish. A picture on the phone showed one of the three remaining men, identified as 20-year-old Wayne Fountain, sitting in the stolen car holding a gun. Police say that Fountain denied being in the car, but did claim that the phone was his. Fountain was also placed under arrest.
Jamal Martin was booked with possession of a stolen vehicle, Charles Garner was booked with possession with the intent to distribute heroin and Wayne Fountain was booked with possession of a stolen firearm.
The two remaining men were not found to be in violation of any laws and were released.
