Record breaking heat expected this weekend

NEW ORLEANS (WVUE) -

We are no strangers to the heat and we are now getting ready to experience one of the hottest stretches of the year so far.

High pressure at the surface and upper levels will combine to set up sinking air across the area.

The subsidence will prevent any widespread convection allowing the sun to heat us very efficiently. The sinking air also allows for compressional heating that works like a pressure cooker.

When you keep pressure high, it will create more friction between air molecules and increase heat. On Friday, we will have highs in the upper 90s with heat indices in the 105 to 109 range. This is just below the heat advisory criteria.

Saturday and Sunday and into the beginning of next week, it is likely we will get official heat advisories with actual high temperatures in the triple digits. Record highs for Friday and the weekend peak at 97 for Louis Armstrong International Airport.
