NEW ORLEANS (WVUE) - Overall crime may be down for the first half of 2015, but the rape and murder rates have dramatically increased in New Orleans.
According to the quarterly Uniform Crime Report (UCR), overall persons and property crime in New Orleans dropped eight percent in the second quarter of 2015 when compared to the second quarter of 2014. This includes a nearly 12 percent decline in violent crime.
Burglaries, thefts, armed robberies and assaults all dropped in the first six months of 2015 when compared to the same time last year.
However, in the first half of 2015, the number of reported rapes increased by 55 percent -- an increase of 54 reported rapes when compared to the first half of 2014.
The number of murders in the first half of 2015 also increased by 29 percent when compared to the first half of 2014. However, this remains among the lowest number of murders in several decades, according to the New Orleans Police Department.
