HAPPENING TODAY: Farewell to fallen Shreveport officer; Excessive heat warning remains in effect

Fallen Shreveport officer will be laid to rest in St. Amant

Friends, family and members of the law enforcement community will say their final goodbyes to a Shreveport police officer killed in the line of duty.

Officer Thomas LaValley, 29, was fatally shot on Wednesday while he answered a call about a suspicious person at a home.

The suspect, 27-year-old Grover Cannon, remains in jail charged with murder. Acting on a tip, officers arrested Cannon in Shreveport on Thursday after a massive manhunt.

Thousands lined the route Saturday as a procession carried LaValley’s body from Shreveport to his final resting place in St. Amant.

Visitation for LaValley will start at 8:30 a.m. Monday at Ourso Funeral Home in Gonzales, LA. A funeral mass is scheduled for 11 a.m. at Holy Rosary Catholic Church in St. Amant, followed by burial in the church cemetery.

Excessive heat warning remains in effect through Monday

The upper high looks to continue dominating the area, meaning little change for our weather.

Afternoon temperatures will be in the mid and upper 90s with a few triple digits.

High dew points will allow the heat index to reach 110-115 degrees Monday, prompting the National Weather Service to issue an Excessive Heat Warning.

Use common sense if outside for any length of time.

Perhaps a cooling shower tomorrow? That's what a couple of models are hinting at, but don't expect more than about 30 percent coverage.

It will be dry and hot through the rest of the week, but perhaps not as brutal as the upper high will break down.

Back to school for dozens of schools

It’s back-to-school for thousands of students in southeast Louisiana.

Public schools in Jefferson, St. John, Lafourche, Terrebonne and St. Charles parishes begin classes today. Students in more than a dozen New Orleans charter schools will also mark the start of a new school year.
