Saints UDFA Willie Snead making strong roster push

Every Saints training camp, it happens: A player unknown before camp makes a splash in camp to force the coaches to take him seriously.

This year, Willie Snead appears to be that guy.

"I've been working pretty hard this training camp," Snead said. "I've been proving to the coaches that I can work hard, possibly make the roster. So as I keep being consistent, showing I won't make the same mistake twice I should be okay."

From the very first practice, the Ball State product has made plays. Thanks to his small stature and efficiency from the slot, he has drawn comparisons to another former undrafted Saints player - Lance Moore.

"I'm not going to compare myself to Lance. We do have similar attributes. I'm a hard worker, he's a hard worker. But at the end of the day, I'm my own person. I want to be better than Lance to be honest, not to be cocky, but that's what I strive for - to be better than the next man."

Sean Payton coached Moore from 2006 to 2013 and would certainly like to see a replica in Snead.

"Man, Lance played a ton of good football for us, so the jury is still out and he still has a ways to go, but those are some things that you do see early on from him," Payton said.

Snead, like Moore, has already seemed to master the art of route running.

"That's what I really emphasize on. I was never a fast guy, I wasn't a 4.3 guy. I have to make sure my routes are precise, precision, cutting stuff like that," Snead said. "So that's what I strive for to try to perfect my routes and know what different routes to run against different coverages. That's what I work on."

Snead plays the position that has the most roster spots available and says the competition is fierce and every rep counts. So while the wide receiver room is encouraging each other to get better, they are also trying to beat each other out to earn a spot.
