NEW ORLEANS, LA (WVUE) -

New Orleans firefighters evacuated a Seventh Ward apartment building Tuesday after finding two Molotov cocktails nearby.

Someone reported smelling a fire around 5:30 a.m.in the 1600 block of North Roman Street.

Firefighters found the two Molotov cocktails burning on the lawn next to the single-story, wood framed structure. They also noticed a strong odor of gasoline around the entire perimeter of the building. Seven people were evacuated from three apartments.

Last week on Aug. 6 and just a few blocks away, fire investigators said two separate fires that broke out within an hour and within blocks of each other appeared suspicious. The first fire went to two alarms at an abandoned house at Marigny and N. Derbigny streets and spread to a nearby structure. The second fire - also in an abandoned home - went to three alarms at Frenchmen and N. Derbigny.

Investigators have not said whether those fires were related.

The NOFD is investigating the N. Roman Street case as aggravated arson. Call the NOFD Office of Fire Prevention at (504) 658-4770 if you have any information that can help find the people responsible.
