NEW ORLEANS (WVUE) -

Streetcar service returns Thursday morning to New Orleans’ downtown area.

The successful testing of streetcar service on the newly installed Half Grand Union track at the intersection of Canal and Rampart streets now allow the streetcars to run to the city’s center.

Service was interrupted during the 30-day shutdown of the intersection while special track work was installed as part of the North Rampart Street/St. Claude Avenue Streetcar Project.

The Loyola-UPT and Canal lines, as well as the portion of the St. Charles line from Erato Street to Canal Street, will resume on Thursday morning. The St. Charles line remains closed from Erato Street through Webster Street as work continues on the Southeast Louisiana Drainage Project.

Streetcars will deliver and pick up passengers at the regular streetcar stops, and replacement bus service in those corridors will be discontinued.
