NEW ORLEANS, LA (WVUE) - Two men were arrested Friday in connection with an early morning carjacking in New Orleans East.
Twenty-year-old Jonathan Joseph and 21-year-old Beauford McGowan III were booked into Central Lock-up on a charge of possession of stolen property.
At around 5:15 a.m., a 35-year-old man was sitting in his SUV in the 7700 block of W. Laverne Street waiting for a co-worker when two men walked up, produced guns and ordered him out of the vehicle. The victim said he handed the suspects his keys and the pair jumped into the SUV and drove off.
During the course of the investigation, Seventh District Officer Kevin Balancier saw the SUV in the area of Chef Menteur Highway and Desire Street. Balancier called for backup to conduct a traffic stop. During the stop, both suspects tried to run but were caught.
The victim could not positively identify the pair as the initial carjackers.
This investigation is ongoing.
Seventh District Detective Perrin Gaines is in charge of the investigation and can be reached at (504) 658-6070.
