LAPLACE, LA (WVUE) -

Classes resume Thursday for students at Lake Pontchartrain Elementary School in LaPlace after a fire delayed the start of the school year.

The fire broke out around 12:15 a.m. Friday (Aug. 14) at East St. John Elementary. The school grounds house a temporary facility for Lake Pontchartrain Elementary.

The facilities used by Lake Pontchartrain Elementary were not damaged during the fire. Students will return to these facilities on Thursday.

Students at East St. John will be moved to the old Leon Godchaux campus. However, crews first need to move equipment and prepare the site for students. Administrators say this could take up to two weeks.

No injuries were reported in Friday’s fire. Investigators are still working to learn the cause of the blaze. Criminal activity is not suspected.

The St. John the Baptist Parish Public School System is asking for school supplies to replace the ones lost in the fire. You can drop off donations at both locations of A Storage Inn - 2820 Highway 51, LaPlace and 3334 W. Airline Highway, Reserve. The locations will be open Monday through Saturday from 9 a.m. until 5 p.m.
