JPSO: Man arrested for firing multiple guns in Metairie bar

Jefferson Parish Sheriff's Deputies arrested a man for firing multiple guns in a busy Metairie bar. The incident occurred early Saturday morning in the 8000 block of Kathy Street.

Police say that a man, later identified as 52-year-old Edward Schlumbrecht, walked into the Turtle Lounge, armed with several guns, including a .38 caliber derringer, a .40 caliber semi-automatic handgun and an AK-47. Once inside the bar, Schlumbrecht fired several shots. No injuries were reported.

Responding officers set up a perimeter and spoke with several people who ran from the bar. They told the officers what happened and said that the Schlumbrecht was holding some patrons hostage. JPSO Sgt. Al West was able to make contact with Schlumbrecht who told police that he was going to kill everybody.

As the SWAT team arrived and prepared to enter the business, one of the hostages ran out of the bar screaming, "they got him, they got him". Deputies entered the bar and found that one of the hostages jumped on Schlumbrecht, over-powered him and was able to get the AK-47 away from him, while other hostages assisted in disarming Schlumbrecht.

According to police, a total of 18 people were inside the bar at the time of the shooting. Crime scene technicians recovered three spent pistol shell casings and one spent rifle cartridge. They were unable to locate the fifth shell casing. Police later learned that Schlumbrecht's possible motive was that he was angry with his neighbor who was in the bar at the time.

Schlumbrecht was transported to the Jefferson Parish Jail where he was booked with 18 counts of attempted murder, 18 counts of false imprisonment, 18 counts of aggravated assault, one count of illegal discharge of a weapon and one count of possession of a firearm in an alcohol beverage outlet.
