Saints fans celebrate first home game at Champions Square

NEW ORLEANS, LA (WVUE) -

This is the day so many Who Dats have been waiting for!

“I drove seven hours to get here so I’m super excited,” Danielle Ivy said.

Saints football is finally back in the Mercedes-Benz Superdome!

“Yay! I miss it, I miss it, oh yeah,” Ray Kirkup commented.

Kay Sabathier, adds, “I have a sign in my house that says winter, spring, summer, football.”

“I couldn't wait all year, since last year, hopefully it’s a turnaround year for the Saints,” fan Leroy Jones said.

Thousands, including a few Patriots fans, braved the heat at Champions Square before kickoff to shake it to some live music.

“I'm having a blast at Champions Square, a blast!” Geena Brewer said.

In typical Saints fan fashion, some came decked out in truly unique outfits; their good luck charms for the team. Others, got creative with their signs, including a few that poked a little fun at Tom Brady and Deflategate.

The Saints fan who made the signs explains, “I’m tired of being known as the bounty gate and finally we get somebody with Deflategate in the same league as we are so I thought it would be funny.”

Patriots fan Sean Saunders says he stands behind the team's star quarterback and took a little ribbing from Who Dats for wearing his team colors to the dome. Saunders said, “I’m here to support my team and no matter where I go, where they're playing, I’m gonna wear the colors.”

But Saunders admits no one celebrates the first pre-season game at home, quite like Saints fans.

It's a party that continued well past kick off and will last throughout the night.
