New Orleans Archbishop Gregory Aymond unveiled the statue on Sunday morning.

The iconic New Orleans statue lost several fingers and sustained damage during Hurricane Katrina. Archbishop Aymond promised it would not be repaired until the city of New Orleans was rebuilt.

As the 10th anniversary approaches, Aymond admits that there is still work to be done.

“We know there are some that are still rebuilding, some who want to come back to New Orleans and have not been able to come back,” he said. “We believe that this restored hand is also a sign of hope to them because it is our pledge that we as individuals and as a church will continue to reach out.”

As part of the repair process, most of the fingers on the statue were replaced. Only one of the original digits was recovered after the initial damage.
