PLAQUEMINES PARISH, LA (WVUE) - Yet another IRS scam has been reported in Plaquemines Parish, according to the Sheriff's Office.
Sheriff Lonnie Greco said a resident reported two automated phone calls saying that the IRS was preparing to sue them, and that they should call 425-329-8669. The number is a "spoofed" number out of Washington State.
Since Aug. 21, citizens from across the country have reported receiving the same call, Greco said. The calls apparently originate from scammers overseas.
Anyone who receives a similar call is urged to report it to the Treasury Inspector General for Tax Administration at 800-366-4484 or file a complaint with the federal Trade Commission at FTC.gov. Add "IRS Telephone Scam" to the comments in your complaint. You can also call the Sheriff's Office at 504-564-2525.
The sheriff reminds residents that the IRS will never angrily demand immediate payment over the phone or call without first mailing a bill; never threaten to bring in local police to arrest you; demand payment without giving you the opportunity to question or appeal the amount you owe; and never require a specific payment method or demand a credit card number over the phone.
