CONVENT, LA (WVUE) - - A barge broke free of its moorings near Convent, Louisiana on Monday, sinking in the Mississippi River.
The barge contains a maximum potential of 8,000 gallons of diesel fuel, according to the U.S. Coast Guard, and salvage operations are underway.
A crane barge broke free of its moorings on the Mississippi River around 5:20 a.m. Monday near mile marker 160.
A backhoe and elevator crane were on the barge when it sank, according to the Coast Guard. Salvage operations are currently underway.
No injuries were reported. The cause of the incident is under investigation.
