NOPD arrests 3rd teenage suspect in string of Uptown armed robberies

New Orleans police arrested a third juvenile after a string of robberies reported in the Uptown area over the past several weeks. This follows the Aug. 21 arrest of two 16-year-old boys also accused in the crimes.

In all, the three suspects are charged with 10 separate armed robberies reported in the Second and Sixth Police Districts in August.

Officers arrested the 15-year-old in the 2900 block of LaSalle Street On Tuesday. Investigators said they found a chrome revolver, cell phones, license plates and stolen property inside the home.

“We made a commitment to relentlessly pursue these individuals and bring them to justice and today we delivered on that promise,” said NOPD Superintendent Michael Harrison. “These teenagers targeted innocent victims throughout the Uptown neighborhood and threatened the safety of everyone around them."

All three teenagers will be charged with armed robbery in cases that started overnight on Aug. 9. 

Around 2:47 a.m., a couple was approached from behind at the intersection of Dominican and Cherokee by a someone armed with a gun demanding their property. The victims complied and the perpetrator ran away. 

Later, around 8:40 p.m., a woman was unloading luggage from her vehicle in the 5800 block of Laurel Street when someone approached her on a bicycle. he pulled out a gun and told her to get on the ground, according to police. The gunman took the victim's purse and drove away in her vehicle.

On Aug. 11, around 10:34 p.m., a 22-year-old woman was waling on Audubon Boulevard when someone grabbed her from behind and demanded her purse. After a brief struggle, the victim said she was hit over the head with a gun and her purse was stolen.

On Aug. 13, around 9:38 p.m., a 33-year-old man was approached by a gunman in the 5600 block of Prytania Street. The victim said the person took his car keys and wallet, then tried to leave in the victim's vehicle. The car would not start, so the suspect fled on foot. Ten minutes later, a 23-year-old woman was walking in the 5300 block of St. Charles Avenue when she was approached by someone armed with a silver gun. The victim told police that the gunman demanded her car key and drove away in her vehicle.

The next morning, at 4:54 a.m., a couple was sitting on a porch in the 5500 block of Willow Street when they were approached by someone with a weapon.The victim told police the gunman grabbed her purse and ran away.

On Aug. 18, around 9 p.m., a woman was inside of her vehicle in the 8200 block of Palm Street when she heard a knock on the window. The victim saw someone holding a revolver outside of her window. The woman got out of her car and and gave money and her keys to the perpetrator. He drove off and picked up a second passenger as he was exiting the parking lot, police said.

On Aug. 20, at 9:30 p.m., a woman said she entered her vehicle in the 2700 block of Palmer Avenue when three males approached and began pulling on the door handles of her vehicle. The victim told police she immediately drove away.

The three teenagers will be charged with attempted armed robbery in that case.

About an hour later, a 27-year-old woman told police she was walking to her house in the 900 block of Cadiz Street when three males approached her and demanded her car keys. The woman refused, at which point one of the suspects armed with a gun puller her to the ground and kicked her, according to police. The suspects took the victim's purse and keys and drove her vehicle away.

Then, around 11 p.m., a man and woman told police they were standing at the intersection of St. Andrew and Prytania streets when three young men, armed with guns, approached them and demanded their property. The victims said they were ordered to get on the ground. The suspects stole a purse, an iPhone and a set of car keys from the victims.

Responding officers were able to track down the vehicle stolen in the Cadiz Street incident at the intersection of Sixth and Carondelet streets. All three suspects jumped out of the vehicle, but officers quickly apprehended two teenagers.

Officer recovered a black semi-automatic handgun and stolen property from both armed robbery incidents inside the stolen vehicle.

In addition, one of the 16-year-old suspects was identified as a suspect in an Aug. 6 armed robbery in the 4100 block of Prytania Street. 

Finally, officer arrested Larry Vail, 43, in connection with three of the incidents, including the 5300 block of St. Charles, 70 Audubon and 5800 block of Laurel Street.

The investigation is ongoing.
