CHALMETTE, LA (WVUE) - St. Bernard Parish President Dave Peralta pleaded not guilty to all 22 charges at his Wednesday arraignment.
He appeared at the Chalmette courthouse to face charges of malfeasance in office, extortion, obstruction of justice, stalking and abuse.
Following his indictment last month, Peralta asked for a speedy trial. He believes the Louisiana attorney general wants to delay his trial to hurt him politically.
Peralta's attorney filed a motion Aug. 20 for a speedy trial. He said it's essential the trial take place prior to October, when Peralta faces re-election. Peralta thinks AG Buddy Caldwell is motivated by his friendship with one of Peralta's opponents in the race.
The state attorney general prosecutors agreed to move up the trial.
