NEW ORLEANS (WVUE) -

The Vieux Carré Commission voted unanimously to remove the Battle of Liberty Place Monument after a public meeting Wednesday.

The monument sits on the edge of the French Quarter between the aquarium and Canal Place.

It commemorates former Confederate soldiers who tried to overthrow Louisiana's government during Reconstruction. The soldiers killed 11 New Orleans police officers.

In August, the Historic District Landmarks Commission and the Human Resources commissions voted Thursday to remove four confederate monuments in New Orleans.

Under the proposal, the Jefferson Davis statue and Battle of Liberty Place monument would be relocated. The Robert E. Lee statue and PGT Beauregard statue would be removed.

The City Council will now have to formally vote on an ordinance to remove the monuments.
