NEW ORLEANS (WVUE) -

New Orleans Mayor Mitch Landrieu will jump into a shark-infested tank on Friday afternoon.

He plans to take a dip at Audubon Aquarium’s Gulf of Mexico exhibit, which is home to 13 sharks, stingrays and some of the largest tarpon in human care.

Landrieu’s swim will mark the 25th birthday of the Audubon Aquarium of the Americas.

In 1990, Mayor Sidney Barthelemy lost a friendly wager with the Audubon Nature Institute President and CEO Rob Forman. Barthelemy bet Forman that the aquarium would not have the facility ready for a September 1 deadline. Forman, however, was successful and the mayor had to take a plunge in the shark tank.

Landrieu’s dip will commemorate 25 years by jumping into the tank as well. He will take the plunge at 2 p.m. Friday.

The Aquarium opened on September 1, 1990, and since then, more than 23 million people have visited the popular New Orleans attraction.
