AFR: Final Saints roster projection

METAIRIE, LA (WVUE) -

Let me start by saying the Saints would be foolish not to scan the waiver wire around the NFL. Injuries and a lack of production at certain are a deep concern.

So as I formulate my final 53-man roster, I think there is a very good chance it could look different by the time they actually play.

Nonetheless, here is how I think the final roster will shake out by Saturday.

Quarterback (3)

Drew Brees
Luke McCown
Garrett Grayson

I think it's time to move on from McCown but I don't think the Saints feel that way. Thus, McCown stays while Griffin gets waived.

Running Back (4)

Khiry Robinson
Mark Ingram
CJ Spiller
Marcus Murphy

This is a tough one. Robinson and Spiller are out and we don't know for how long. If they have to miss a couple of games, the Saints may be forced to add another running back. Tim Hightower has proven to be that guy. However, having Hightower on an opening
day roster would guarantee his salary. I don't think the Saints want to do that.

Fullback (1)

Austin Johnson

Wide Receiver (6)

Marques Colston
Brandin Cooks
Brandon Coleman
Willie Snead
Joe Morgan
Seantavius Jones

I know, I know. Joe Morgan had a awful finish to camp. But tell me is there anyone in this group other than Cooks that can blow the top off a defense? Joe Morgan is the only one. For his diversity of skill set, I'm keeping Joe Morgan around. Though I wouldn't
surprise it all if Josh Morgan is their choice. He has been the more consistent performer. I'm not completely sold on Jones as solely a special teamer but I added him on.

Offensive Lineman (8)

Zach Strief
Jahri Evans
Max Unger
Tim Lelito
Terron Armstead
Andrus Peat
Senio Kelemete
Mike McGlynn

The first seven seem pretty set. I have  McGlynn earning the final offensive line spot. But it could easily go to Sean Hickey, Cyril Lemon or Nic Becton.

Tight End(2)

Ben Watson
Josh Hill

Orson Charles is out for the first week of the season with a suspension. But I have to ask, do the Saints really need a third tight end? None have really shown anything and given the health at other positions, this may be a spot where they can afford to
have one less spot. Especially since this year they have to keep three quarterbacks.

Defensive Line (7)

Cam Jordan
Akiem Hicks
Kevin Williams
John Jenkins
Tyeler Davison
Bobby Richardson
Kasim Edebali

Richardson faded in the middle of the preseason but finished strong in Green Bay. I think he gets in. Kaleb Eulls, Tavaris Barnes and Ashaad Mabry have all had moments.

Linebackers (7)

David Hawthorne
Stephone Anthony
Ramon Humber
Dannell Ellerbe
Davis Tull
Hau'Oli Kikaha
Parys Haralson

I was going to leave Ellerbe off then I saw the cap hit the Saints would take by cutting him. Plus, I'm told he could be ready in time for the season opener.  Haralson is certainly not a guarantee at this point.

Cornerbacks (6)

Keenan Lewis
Brandon Browner
Damian Swann
Delvin Breaux
Kyle Wilson
Stanley Jean Baptiste

This could be one of those positions that the Saints are scanning the waiver wire for right now. With Lewis' injury the Saints will have to carry six.

Safety (6)

Jairus Byrd
Kenny Vaccaro
Rafael Bush
Pierre Warren
Jamarca Sanford
Kenny Phillips

The mystery known as Jairus Byrd combined with other injuries will force the Saints to keep six safeties.

Specialists (3)

Zach Hocker
Thomas Morstead
Justin Drescher

For the first time all preseason, I'm going with Hocker. Dustin Hopkins outplayed him in practice but Hocker has played better in games. This too could be another position where they are looking elsewhere around the NFL.
