Suspect identified in deadly officer-involved shooting - FOX 8 WVUE New Orleans News, Weather, Sports, Social

Shreveport police have released the name of the man who they say fired a shot at officers then led several agencies on a chase that crossed into Bossier City. 

The series of events began around 12:39 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 6, when Shreveport police were called to an apartment in the 8500 block of Chalmette Drive on reports of a purse snatching. When officers arrived, the victim reportedly told them she was getting out of her car when a man approached her and stole her purse. The victim said the suspect then fled the scene in a gray Nissan.

A short time later, officers were called to the 1000 block of Quail Creek Road where a man driving a gray Nissan sedan had allegedly just stolen a purse from a vehicle parked on the property. 

Then, just after 3:00 p.m., Shreveport police say they were called the Betty Virginia Park after a lady said a man tried to sell her narcotics. When police arrived on the scene, the man had already left the area. The woman reportedly told police the man drove away in a gray Nissan Altima.

The man was soon identified as 28-year-old Mohamed Ibrahim.

A short time later, an officer caught up with the Ibrahim but when the officer approached him in the 3800 block of Creswell Avenue, Ibrahim reportedly fired a shot at the officer then fled the scene. The officer was not injured.

Police say they eventually called off their pursuit for fear of public endangerment since Ibrahim was reportedly driving at a high rate of speed.

Around 5:30 p.m., Caddo Parish Sheriff's Deputies spotted the vehicle Ibrahim was believed to be driving on I-220 near North Market Street and attempted to stop the vehicle. However, authorities say Ibrahim refused to pull over, leading deputies on a high-speed chase through Bossier City. 

Eventually, the Ibrahim drove back into Shreveport where he reportedly wrecked in the 2800 block of Holly Street near East Washington Street. 

Police said Ibrahim then got out of his vehicle and pointed a gun at police. That's when several agencies shot Ibrahim multiple times, killing him. 

"Our main concern is that the public is safe," said Shreveport Police Public Information Officer Corporal Marcus Hines.

Authorities said officers from the Shreveport Police Department, Caddo Parish Sheriff's Office and the Centenary College Department of Public Safety participated in the shooting.

"We would like to thank the Caddo Parish Sheriff's Office, Bossier City Police Department, Louisiana State Police and Centenary College police," said Hines.

Three Shreveport police officers are on paid administrative leave in accordance with departmental policy. The officers include: Officer Kenneth Thompson, hired by the department in May 2013; Officer Raymond Blunt, hired by the department in March 2012 and Sergeant Patrick McConnell, hired in 1996.

No officers were injured.

The incident remains under investigation.
