NEW ORLEANS (WVUE) - Louisiana is ranked among the top five states in the country with the cheapest gas. That's according to GasBuddy.com, that lists Louisiana as number five when it comes to the lowest prices at the pump. Although some stations are offering gasoline below $2-dollars a gallon, the average cost of gas in the state is $2.10 a gallon. South Carolina reportedly has the cheapest gas, followed by Mississippi, Alabama and Tennessee.
In New Orleans, a survey of 415 stations show the cheapest gas is at Costco, where it's selling for $1.94 a gallon. On average, the cost is $2.15 a gallon, down more than a nickle from the week before. A year ago, prices were more than a dollar higher.
"Not only did Labor Day weekend see millions of Americans take to the road and spend far less than they did last year at the pump, but a growing number of them were able to fill up at under $2/gallon for the summer's last hurrah," said Patrick DeHaan, GasBuddy senior petroleum analyst. "
The survey shows that one in ten stations in the country is now offering gasoline prices at $1.99 a gallon or less. Experts predict the price at the pump will continue to move lower, with the average cost below $2-dollars a gallon by Christmas or before..
